Ryan Vikedal, the band's then drummer, was a very stylistic and energetic drummer and was crazy when he wanted to be and mellow when he had to be. One of the few positives of the record is the drumming. Unfortunately, Nickelback chose the long road. The other is a long, winding highway descending into universal hate and mediocrity. One is a short, smooth blacktop to success and acclaim. Not that there is anything wrong with mainstream rock music (Foo Fighters come to mind.) but the way most people see mainstream rock is that there are two directions to go in.

He ultimately came to the conclusion that in order to successfully accomplish this, he must shift his band's musical style to a far more radio oriented sound, in order to gain acceptance from a largely diverse group of musical fans worldwide. With the record's lead single, "How You Remind Me" already certified gold, Kroeger wondered how he would maintain a steady balance between his music and his newfound fame. Imagine a young Chad Kroeger, polarized by the massive success of his band's third studio album, Silver Side Up.
